I have to say that I am truly devastated to hear that you guys have actually shut the Kitchen Door...  I was hoping that it was a very tasteless joke my buddy was playing on me, and you were just moving to a new location, when I learned of the sad news.  Nothing pisses me off more than to here an Austin original had to close down because of this BS economy that we can all thank our wonderfully corrupted government for.  Don't get me wrong, I'm not one of those people who blame The Man for all of our problems and I know that we live in the best damn country in the world, but sometimes I'd just like to slap the pee-wadding (something my Grandma Marn use to say) out of a couple of our so called leaders...  Sorry for changing the subject, just had to rant for a second.
Kitchen Door, you had the Best Damn Meatloaf Sandwich that I have ever put in my mouth and I would love to get even close to that recipe here at my house!  I wish you all the luck and I can't wait till you open that Kitchen Door back up...

I am so upset that you have closed. We will miss so many things but especially the bread, deviled eggs & desserts. My family had so many good times at the Door. When we moved from Tarrytown to Westlake we got the Door as our comfort food for almost every meal for 4 days. I don't want to believe I will never have any of it again so I will just be looking forward to when your next incarnation happens.

We are all heartbroken.

The chicken salad and Canadian Cheese soup is EVERYTHING!

I remember when Friday's alternated beteen Canadian Cheese and Brocolli Cheese soups.

We miss y'all very much.  We would rather you come back but if not a cookbook with our favorite items would be great!

Someone has those fabulous recipes...I know you will figure out how to use them again.  We miss you!  You catered my mother's 80th birthday party, provided me with countless angel food cakes with white icing and chocolate drizzle, those wonderful oatmeal cookies (it HAS to be the old AISD "Flying Saucer" recipe), and THE BEST cinnamon rolls EVER, ANYWHERE, PERIOD, CASE CLOSED!  All the best...I look forward to the next incarnation of The Kitchen Door Austin!  Good luck.

We will miss you so much!  I feel like a part of my life has died.  We've been eating Kitchen Door food since the 1970s. I just got a kolache a few weeks ago and commented that it was the best one I've ever had.  Please find a way to come back.

Oh dear, another Austin staple is gone.  I first became addicted to your meatloaf sandwich when I worked on West 6th Street and would faithfully pass up ThunderCloud Subs to eat at your Lake Austin Blvd. location.  Even though I got paid ThunderCloud wages I would buy Kitchen Door bc I never compromise when it comes to food.  You were clearly the best choice then and now.  I was just about to place a catering order and discovered you had to close your doors.  After reading why I have to admit I understand why you had to close.  It's hard to keep the high standards and still turn a profit these days.  Homemade food is not as valued by the corporate communities that flock to chains these days.  Other Austin staples have had to reinvent themselves as well and I hope you can do the same in the future.  I will faithfully be waiting with my empty plate.  Thank you for so much for the many wonderful meals and those brownies, they were the biggest and the best. My husband will miss the best bread in town and your cinnamon rolls!

I am crushed to hear that you are closing!!!  I visit Austin six or seven times a year to be with my daughter who ALWAYS meets me at the airport with your chicken salad.  It's a wonderful tradition that I am not ready to give up!!  Please reconsider and at least make your delicious dishes available to us SOMEHOW!!!!

I am soooo sad.   I am new to Austin and yours was the very first restaurant I went to the weekend I moved here.  I am devoted to your chicken salad.  When I drove up and saw you were closed I was in shock.  I hope you can find a way to come back.  At the least, please consider a cook book!

Kitchen Door was such a part of my college and grad school years!  I remember getting stacks of Studybreaks for the coupons and lived off of your cookies and turkey sandwiches.  I always try to come back when I am in Austin - I am sad to see you go but think a cookbook is in order!!!

VERY DISAPPOINTING!! I would pick up lunch at least once a week at the Kitchen Door and bring it to my daughter at Doss Elementary! It was her favorite "treat" and we would have such a great lunch together. NW Hills is now left with Kneaded Pleasures and Wendys?????? What a shame!

I lived in Austin for four years and loved your shop! Thanks for the delicious food (chicken salad was my favorite).  It is sad to hear you are closing up, but glad to know you have the integrity not to compromise on your values...I hope that as time and the economy shift you are able to begin a new project if and when you want. Best wishes.

I began visiting The Kitchen Door when it was on Exposition - next to Yaring's.  We always stopped for a chicken salad sandwich and a cookie when my mom went shopping in the Casis village.

I'm so sorry you are closing - but I understand your predicament.  I will be closing my shop soon - Sparks - which has been in town for 20 years (not as long as you!!).
Give my best to Christopher and the entire Breed family.  I'll never forget this business - and that bread!  And those Cinnamon Rolls!  They were always my "reward" in college and beyond.

We have loved your chicken salad for so many years! You will truly be missed. While sitting here writing this to you on my iPhone in front of your empty store and I watched 6 people come up to your door and stop in disbelief that you are gone! Please keep us posted if you ever reopen or accept orders on line!
Best wishes, Nancy Tarvin

What a gloomy day to find out that The Kitchen Door has closed its' doors.  We have been customers since you opened for business and have always thoroughly enjoyed your wonderful recipes: soups, sandwiches, bakery goods (especially the cookies and Texas Spice Cake).  We have even purchased several of
those beautiful Texas Lamps that you had for sale years back.
Thank you for all your wonderful years of service to the Austin Area.

I was devastated when I drove up today to get my chicken salad and hoping that you would have your tortellini salad also and the place was empty.  I am so sorry, I would drive from Round rock to eat lunch at your place.  I wish you the best and hope that you can come ack in the future.  Maybe you will publish a cooking book with your delicious food specially the chicken salad......
There is no other lunch place that has the type of food you have.
Will be missed, you were an Austin icon!
Blessings....

Imagine my disbelief when I drove up to the Kitchen Door today and saw no tables out on the sidewalk!!!  I was just deciding whether or not to get the Cheddar cheese soup to go w/my half turkey sandwich.  This reminds me of when Mike and Charlie's closed in the 80's, and we still grieve over that.  The Kitchen Door has always been such a pleasant place to go to get excellent food.  I will miss you and I am hoping for your return.

I have frequented The Kitchen Door over the last 14 months and I must say every visit was always great.  Very friendly staff and by far the "BEST" chicken salad I have ever had.  Your establishment will be greatly missed by the Northwest Hills community.  I wish you and your families the best.  Thank you for making my experience a very pleasurable one.

This truly breaks my heart - for you, the neighborhood, and me and my family and friends.  The Kitchen Door is an Austin icon and part of what keeps us uniquely Austin and not a cookie cutter copy of every other  American chain oriented neighborhood.  There is no other sandwich in the world that equals The Kitchen Door and eating one tells me I'm home after being on a tripl or in the hospital.  Every ingredient is the freshest and highest quality.  The Bread was absolutely the best.  The Turkey and Provolone was the first out of the hospital real food I ate after surgery for colon cancer.  Eating at one of the outside tables is always my first outing after being sick.  It is part of my healing ritual.   It is always a signal to me that all is alright with me and my world.  I have lost a dear piece of my world.   I wish you best in whatever you do but most of all I wish for your return.
